How should I manage my eating and medication administration during Ramadan?
GLP1-RA medications were originally used for type 2 diabetes, so they’ve been used safely during Ramadan for many years. The same guidance applies when taking them for weight loss. Take your medication on the same day each week, at roughly the same time — with or without meals.
When fasting during Ramadan, you have 3 options:
1. Pause the medication and be mindful: Ramadan is a temporary change, and your weight loss journey is long-term. You can safely take a break and resume your medication after Ramadan.
2. Continue medication:
- Don’t skip your pre-dawn meal; choose whole foods rich in fibre and protein.
- Watch out for symptoms of low blood sugar such as hunger, dizziness, anxiety, tingling lips, or fatigue — if they occur, you may need to break your fast or lower your dose.
- Be aware of rebound hunger at Iftar; Semaglutide should help with appetite control.
Fasting can unpredictably affect weight due to sleep and routine changes, but things will stabilise post-Ramadan.
3. Religious consideration: Illness is an exemption from fasting according to the Qur’an. Since obesity is a disease, you may discuss this decision with your Imam if you feel it applies.
